This shot was a defining moment for Pierce. It was the first to set in motion a new way of approaching painterly impressionist seascapes. It was a departure from the literal and figurative, into the purposefully abstract expression of what a beautiful sunset looks like through the filters of imagination and memory. This vibrant hyperreal color scheme is commonly used in seascape painting, with the addition of magenta and purple lowlights here adding interest and dimension.
